Required Skills:
MSc or PhD in Plant Breeding or equivalent science;
4+ years of experience in a commercial breeding program;
Must be proficient in English; proficiency in Spanish or French is a plus;
High level of integrity and accountability;
Excellent attention to detail;
Ability to work independently and as part of a Team;
Ability to analyze and communicate information effectively and accurately;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs;
Exhibit individual initiative, work independently, be technical proficient and accurate; effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations; initiate and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures and possess attention to detail.
Must hold a valid drivers’s license;

Job Description:
Reporting to the Director Plant Breeding & Seed Development and in accordance with the business strategy defined by Company Leadership, the Plant Breeder will define and execute the breeding strategy to create innovative and competitive varieties for the potato processing industry. The Plant Breeder will be responsible for the development of commercially successful potato varieties in accordance with defined objectives of the breeding program.
Identifying and selecting plants exhibiting desirable traits based on natural genetic variation;
Crossing plants to produce new breeding material, analyzing and scientifically assessing plant breeding in greenhouse and field trials and selecting the best varieties;
Develop, evaluate and recommend new methods and technologies to assist and improve potato breeding;
Develop and manage breeding research collaborations and germplasm exchanges with public and private organizations based on commercial and technical merit;
Ensure access to current scientific knowledge and germplasm for use in the company’s breeding and related programs by maintaining regular industry and scientific community contact;
Keeping up to date in the fast-moving area of science and translating ideas from scientific literature into new approaches to breeding problems;
Responsible for coordinating and managing all breeding trials and coordinates the implementation of field trials in the main production areas
Coordinate the implementation of programs through a network of company research facilities and screening sites and leverage current research technologies.
Assist in the development of cultural management profiles for developed/selected new varieties; and collaborates with Agronomist and Researchers in the conduct of such trials;
Multiplying up and producing virus-free plants;
Coordinate breeder and nuclear seed production of newly developed varieties in collaboration with seed production managers for the production of breeding materials needed for evaluations;
Maintaining detailed records throughout the research and development cycle;
Develop awareness of market context, monitor the position of competitors and aligns program direction strategic and technical accordingly.
Ensure appropriate germplasm protection and PVP procedures are implemented for Cavendish Farms potato varieties and germplasm and is responsible for the registration of new varieties;
Serve as a liaison between Cavendish Farms and the government, university and other member of the industry particularly on Variety Development/Potato Breeding research programs;
Attend professional meetings to represent the company’s breeding program, promote new varieties, and to learn and collect information relevant to the breeding program;
Develop and maintain a well-planned breeding program that is balanced and provides commercial products for the processing industry;
Managing, supporting and training breeding associates, technical and field staff;
Maximize the use of all resources allocated to the breeding program(s): human, technical, financial;
Coordinates with research team and growers the development of activities in greenhouse and field;
Plan, prepare and ensure proper disbursement of the breeding program budget.
