Job Description:
Position Overview:
The PEIWBGA is seeking a full-time seasonal Agronomist to support all Island wild
blueberry producers through applied extension, agronomic program development, and
innovation. This role will play a central part in strengthening the sustainability,
profitability, and long-term resilience of PEI’s wild blueberry sector.

The Agronomist will work directly with growers, landowners, researchers, and industry
partners to design and deliver an Island-wide wild blueberry agronomy initiative. A key
focus of the position will be the development and implementation of robust sprayfree/
low-input production strategies, improved harvest and post-harvest management
practices, and new production protocols to increase the value of PEI wild blueberries.

Key Responsibilities:

Extension & Grower Engagement
Conduct on-farm visits, field days, workshops, and other extension activities for Island wild blueberry producers; provide practical, field-based agronomic support and troubleshooting; gather and synthesize grower input to inform agronomy programming and applied research priorities.

Agronomy Program & Initiative Development
Design and help implement an Island-wide wild blueberry agronomy initiative
aligned with grower needs and market opportunities; develop and support a robust spray-free/low-input strategy program, including guidance on production practices, risk management, and compliance; support improved harvest and post-harvest management strategies to enhance fruit quality and value.

Integrated Pest Management & Production Protocols
Support the rollout and troubleshooting of new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols; assist growers in adapting practices to meet new production standards and
emerging market requirements; depending on outcomes from market research and development activities, identify, recruit, and onboard candidate farms to participate in new or pilot production protocols.

Sustainability, Land Use & Agroecological Outcomes
Evaluate agronomic opportunities to improve: biodiversity and habitat quality; carbon sequestration and climate resilience; native pollinator populations; soil health and nutrient management; farm profitability and long-term viability; identify fields most at risk of conversion and work with landowners and growers to mitigate risk through improved management and value creation.

Applied Research, Coordination & Reporting
Prioritize applied research and extension activities relevant to PEI wild blueberry
production; align agronomic activities with available resources, funding programs, and
industry partnerships; collect data, document outcomes, and prepare reports or summaries for growers, funders, and stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience:
Degree or diploma in agronomy, agriculture, environmental sciences, or a related
field; experience in crop production, agricultural extension, or applied research (wild blueberries or perennial crops are an asset); strong understanding of IPM, sustainable production systems, and agroecological principles; excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with growers and landowners; ability to work independently in a field-based role and manage multiple priorities; familiarity with PEI agriculture and growing conditions is considered a strong asset; strong analytical skills with attention to detail is considered a significant asset.

Preferred Qualifications: educational or work background in marketing an asset.
Wages:
$41-$50/hour
